Theology of Ministry
Introduction: A biblical theology of ministry is a set of biblical principles that determine how we will function and guides all ministry decisions. The statement of faith is what we believe, our theology of ministry is why we do ministry and our methodology of ministry is how we do ministry (programs, etc).
The reason for a theology of ministry is that everything that is done in ministry is to be orderly (Titus 1:5). A biblical approach to ministry lays a foundation for HBC’s mission. Our chief goal is to accurately reflect God’s intentions by extracting objectives from His Word and thus glorify Him.
Theology of Ministry: Our approach to ministry is dictated by Biblical standards based on the explicit and implicit teachings of Scripture. In areas of preference believers must strive, as much as possible, to maintain the unity of the Spirit preferring one another. Our priority of relationships is God and other believers first.
Scripture is the lone foundation: The Bible is the only word of God (2 Tim 3:16) and is consequently completely trustworthy. God’s Word must be known and applied in every area of life. Scripture therefore is the only foundation upon which the church is built and it contains the message and methods of the church.
The Authority of Scripture: Since God alone is holy and the supreme authority in all matters of life He has the authority to establish and command obedience for belief and practice and is right to expect it (2 Pet 1:3). Every aspect of ministry shall be motivated by the authority and sufficiency of Scripture alone (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Accordingly, the church doesn’t derive her message or methods from culture. The church gathers to believe, proclaim, obey and be affectioned to God’s Word (1 Tim 4:13).
The Glory of God: The chief end of God is to display His glory (Is. 48:11; Rom. 11:36). His glory is displayed in creation (Ps. 19:1), His Son (Heb. 1:3), salvation (Eph. 1:6, 12, 14) and His people (1 Pet. 4:10-11). Accordingly, the chief goal of the church is to glorify God. If a ministry is to display the glory of God, there must be the utmost commitment to operate in excellence.
